What you need to start kicking ass

No matter what the theme is, there are some basic principles that you might want to follow to help you do well in any season of Fortnite.
You only have space to carry 5 items in Fortnite. What is a common best practice? Start with:
An AR-style weapon (medium to long range)
A shotgun (short range)
These weapons are great at killing, and also exist in all seasons of Fortnite. So even as weapons are added and removed, there’s always an AR-style weapon and a shotgun-style weapon. If you get good at using these, you can do well no matter what.
What about the other 3 slots? Here are some suggestions:
Shields or healing for one slot. If you aren’t sure, go with shields. When hit by an attack, you’ll always lose shields first but might not lose health. So you’ll always need shields but might not need health.1
Mobility. The ability to use mobility items separates the seriously good players to the ok players. These items help you move quickly on the map, “rotating”. They help you “push” when an opponent has been weakened. And they help you escape when you’re on the receiving end. There’s a whole article on mobility. Learn it. Live it. Know it.
A “spray” weapon. These weapons are shorter range than the AR, but longer than the shotgun. They shoot a lot of bullets in a short amount of time, and you can get a lot of kills without much skill, just by pointing in the general direction and “spraying” your opponent.
A Sniper weapon. These shoot slowly, reload slowly, but do tremendous damage, even at long range. Do you want to be a wimp and kill people from afar? Good. That’s a great strategy for destroying the lobby. Learning how to use snipers will help you do this.
Which you take of these items will depend on your preferences. Those preferences can and will change as Fortnite adds and removes items over time. The game evolves, and so should your strategy.
Also, different seasons can introduce totally new weapons or items that don’t fit the above classifications. Have fun with these items! This is, after all, just a game. Some of those items will be especially powerful, and some will be ridiculous but super fun to use. The Disco Grenade is a huge fan favorite. But when in doubt, the basics above will always exist and are always reliable.
What next? Weapon ordering is a good topic to look at.
Sometimes you’ll have an item that regenerates your shields, so you may want to carry health instead. There will be other exceptions, too, such as items that heal both shields and health. Pizza and Chug Splash are two examples.
