Respect the Sniper

A sniper can take you out with a single headshot, even if you’re at full health and shields. You need to respect the sniper’s potency by always moving, especially if you’re out in the open and don’t have natural cover like buildings, cars, rocks, and trees.

Some key tactics to keep in mind:

  • Chain together movements like running, sliding, jumping, swerving, crouching up and down if you’re staying in the same general area.

  • Make sure your back is covered, especially if you’re trying to snipe someone else. You’re an easy target for another sniper. If you are using natural cover, but also have a vehicle, park the vehicle to give you cover from behind.

  • If you see glint from a scope, move! The 4x scope, common on snipers, has a telltale glint when it’s being used. You’ll see a bright white circle when the shooter is using it. If you see that, better get your head out of the way or it will be the last thing you see that game. Other weapons can also use that scope, but it’s best to assume a sniper until you know for sure that it’s not (perhaps based on the sound of the shots).

  • Always drive up at an angle. You can get sniped through a windshield, especially if it was already shot out. Don’t drive straight towards a sniper. Approach at an angle to prevent them from getting a headshot.

  • Don’t stand still and 50/50! If you’re shooting at a sniper with your AR, you’ve got to keep moving while firing. I recommend firing between sniper shots. If you stand still to trade shots, you will get one-shotted. I know this sounds obvious, but a lot of people (me too!) are guilty of this.

  • Beware third parties! If you’re in a battle which lasts any longer than 30 seconds, you’re likely to attract the attention of others. When the battle is done, keep moving. Don’t stand out in the open collecting loot! Grab it and dash somewhere safe to heal up and re-equip/reload.

  • Be careful not to poke your head up as an easy target! If you’re using a hill as shelter, so that you’re on one side of and your opponent is on the other, be aware that the first thing to appear if you move uphill is your head. That makes it an easy sniper target.

One of the best strategies against a sniper is to change the battle to one where sniping isn’t helpful. Use your mobility to get closer. But if you can’t, just get out of the battle completely. Knowing when to run from a battle is just as important as knowing when to win.
